Authorities and family members are seeking the return of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, who vanished from her Arizona home on February 1. The disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, mother of NBC Today show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, has evolved into a complex federal and local investigation. Nearly six months after she vanished from her home near Tucson, the FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department are still pursuing leads, while the family continues to offer a$1 million rewardfor her safe return. Bitcoin Demands and the First Ransom NotePhoto: BBC—Details of the initial ransom note were recently disclosed by Brianna Whitney, a former reporter for KTVK-TV and KOLD-TV, via the Crime Junkies podcast. The note, sent to media outlets including KOLD-TV, KGUN-TV, and TMZ, was addressed specifically to Savannah Guthrie and stated, Hello Savannah. We have your mother Nancy. She is safe but scared. The kidnapper set a strict timeline for payment in bitcoin, beginning with a$4 million demanddue by 5 p. m. on Thursday, Feb. 5. This amount escalated to $6 million if the first deadline was missed, with a final cutoff of 5 p. m. on Monday, Feb. 9. The note warned that if the final deadline passed, Nancy Guthrie will be killed. Contradictory Messages and the Claim of DeathPhoto: WRAL—A second note was sent before the final deadline of the first note. This message claimed that the abductors did not fully grasp the seriousness of her physical conditions and stated that Nancy Guthrie perished shortly after she was taken, suggesting the death was heart-related. The FBI Phoenix office later clarified that while some messages weredeemed to be extortion attempts without legitimacy, other demands remained potentially legitimate and under investigation. This contradicts an earlier report citing an unnamed FBI official who suggested all three kidnapping-related messages were fake. The family has had to navigate a wave of opportunistic scams. TMZ reported receiving several emails from individuals claiming to have information on the missing matriarch in exchange for money. FBI Profiler Analysis of the Perpetrator—Retired FBI profiler Jim Clemente, speaking on Brian Entin Investigates, analyzed the notes line-by-line and suggested they were written by one person. He revealed that investigators are coordinating with multiple labs across the country to analyzeDNA evidence. Nanos stated he remains positive the case will be resolved.
