Bitcoin options shift signals US$70,000 as new key resistance level

16th July 2026 – (New York) Bitcoin’s surging derivatives market is showing signs of a shift in investor positioning that may temper expectations of a rapid move beyond the US$70,000 threshold. Data from Deribit Metrics indicate that call options at the US$70,000 strike price have become the most heavily traded contracts, with open interest standing at approximately US$1. 63 billion. Call options represent bullish wagers that the cryptocurrency will rise above a specified level before expiry, and the prominence of the US$70,000 strike marks a notable change in sentiment. For much of the past six months, the US$80,000 call had been the dominant bullish bet, attracting similar levels of open interest, while the US$60,000 put was the preferred hedge against declines. Analysts frequently cited a US$60,000 to US$80,000 trading corridor during that period. The transition in popularity from the US$80,000 to the US$70,000 call suggests that traders may now view US$70,000 as the more immediate upside target, while the continued strength of the US$60,000 put indicates that level remains a perceived floor for prices. Market structure may also play a role in limiting upward momentum. Imran Lakha, founder of Options Insights, noted that dealers currently hold a net long gamma position above US$70,000. In practice, this means market makers seeking to remain hedged are likely to sell into rallies beyond that point, a dynamic that can dampen sharp advances. Such hedging activity effectively acts as a restraint, slowing the pace of gains if bitcoin approaches or surpasses US$70,000. Lakha added that ether appears less affected by similar dealer positioning and could therefore experience more pronounced price swings. Bitcoin was recently trading near US$64,100, down around 1 per cent since midnight UTC. Other major digital assets, including ether, XRP and solana, recorded comparable declines, while Nasdaq 100 futures slipped by 0. 5 per cent, reflecting a softer tone in broader risk markets. Alex Kuptsikevich, chief market analyst at FxPro, cautioned that sudden financial shocks could still trigger a sharp sell‑off in cryptocurrencies or global equities. However, he suggested that accumulating positions during quieter trading periods, particularly at levels well below previous peaks, may be a reasonable strategy in the near term.
